The word Doula came from ancient Greek language and literal meaning of Doula is slave/servant, but here Doula means a woman who helps other women in childbirth and beyond. That is why we have a Birth Doula and the profession of a Doula in the past belonged to women family of a motherly. However in western societies Doula's job have been very popular because mother's women relatives are away or working and they may have different opinions than the mother's.

How did I become a Doula?

I became a Doula because my friend did not have her mom around and she said my husband is would rather to video tape! The art of being a Doula is to leave our ego out the door before going to a birth or taking care of a new mom as a Postpartum Doula. Here is why word Doula should means slave! A Doula needs to be humble and has a free soul to be a real servant. Anyhow who is a better master than a woman giving birth or a newborn! That is why I love being a birth Doula and a Postpartum Doula.
