AS A BIRTH DOULA FOR CHILDBIRTH As a birth doula I meet with expecting parent(s) initially to get to know each other. Afterwards, there are two meetings before mom's due date. The first meeting is to discuss about preferences in labor and guiding parent(s) to write their Birth Plan. Also discuss about the process of labor and if there is any concerns that parent(s) may have. I will teach some relaxation/meditation techniques to mom in that session. I will also inquire some information from mom so I can make a Hypno-Birthing cd for her. The Hypno cd is personalized and customized for the mom only. It is a relaxation cd which is also helpful to ease mom to fall asleep. The cd is helpful to take away any fear of labor when mom is ready to let go. In the second meeting I will go over some information with Parent(s) on what to expect on how labor may start. We will also be rehearsing labor and discussing about when to call me as labor starts. I give mom a guided imagery massage for 30 minutes, in which many of my clients fall asleep! I will be on-call for parent(s) until there are signs of labor. After I receive a call from dad I will come to the home of parent(s) to support and guide them especially working with mom to keep her calm and relax. Depending of where the birth is suppose to happen, either at home or in hospital, the necessary trip is done together and support is continued until the baby is born. After birth I will stay for two hours to make sure the initial breastfeeding and bonding with baby is happening. A follow up visit will take place at parent(s) home or hospital within the first week after baby is born. This visit is to make sure breastfeeding is going well and to support mom in that area. Also we will go over the experience of the birth. I will still be available if there are any questions on taking care of baby or breastfeeding. If a question on breastfeeding is beyond my knowledge I will refer mom to a Lactation consultant.
